This Saturday Fidens was fixing dinner for us because I had to finish a manuscript before going to the movies. He made Udang Goreng Mentega, (Prawns Saute with Sweet Sauce) , as shown below.
As we were enjoying it, we realized how global our meal was.
- prawns from Pakistan
- broccoli from the US
- ginger, garlic and tomatoes from Japan
- sweet sauce was a mixture of soya sauce (japan), kecap manis ABC (indonesia) and sweet chili sauce (thailand)
- the frying pan from france
- our plates from china
and the list may go on and on if we look closer! This reminds of me of this book I recently read (the world is flat), which is basically a summary of examples how boundaries between countries are getting less obvious. An elementary school student in the US is having after school lessons with teachers from India through the internet, while their moms are talking on the phone with the customer service, also in India (this book tells a lot about outsourcing to India), who are to represent the American company who produced their microwaves. The list goes forever; the book has 616 pages, but it was quite entertaining.
All in all, I was quite happy to be served a delicious dinner, and find it also amusing to have people from all over the world to be involved in it. My worries are that as the fuel price rise even higher this summer, and possibly get even higher in the future, will our table still be filled with fresh nutritious food after 30 years or so? One anxious thought of a housewife indeed
